Bird Control Dundee

As an important North East city Dundee shares with the other east coast cities a significant problem with seagulls as well as the normal problem with feral pigeons that most cities experience.

Dundee has had a fascinating history as a major trading port, an important manufacturing centre, a centre for journalism and more recently the games industry. Over the centuries great wealth has been created and this is reflected in many of the City’s fine buildings.

Over the years PPS has played an important part in helping protect this great heritage and buildings like the Sheriff Court and DC Thomson’s buildings have enjoyed protection from bird fouling through the use of our systems.

We have countless different systems available for use allowing us to tailor our recommendations and costs to eliminate wastage thus ensuring that not only do we provide the right solution to any problem, we do so at a very competitive cost.

About our Bird Control Solutions

Netting

This is often a favoured method of protecting buildings, loading bays and warehouses from bird roosting. One reason for this is that netting can be affixed in such a manner that it remains unobtrusive and the netting is so versatile, in that it can be supplied and fitted in various dimensions and can come in a variety of colours, dependent on the actual stone colour of the building requiring protection.

Obviously any client is looking for a lasting solution and our combination of ultra violet stabilised netting alongside marine quality stainless steel fixings and fittings guarantees a superior finished system capable of withstanding the Scottish climate over a long period.

We have wide experience of providing netting solutions as a bird deterrent and solving pigeon and other bird problems at sites across the whole of Scotland.

As you can see from the photograph above, netting is virtually invisible when properly fitted (left) and is only just visible using a zoom lens, as in the picture on the right.

Anti Bird Strike

We stock a wide range of anti- bird spike systems and dependent on your problem we can recommend the right solution.

These systems provide a long term solution to birds roosting on buildings and can be affixed in a relatively short period of time. It is important the spacing’s are set at the correct intervals if the system is to work at maximum efficiency and that the fixing agent is suitable for Scotland’s wet climate.

Some of these systems are considerably superior to others and we have tested over a period of years the most effective so that we can offer our clients the system that matches their needs both in terms of reliability and durability.

Anti-Bird Spike has largely replaced the old Spring and Wire Systems of the past as they have been shown to be considerably more durable. Properly fitted they can be barely noticeable on ledges and even then only through close inspection.

Bird Scaring

This method of bird control can be effective in moving birds on and is usually used against starling populations to move them out of town centres or off bridge structures or tall buildings where they have chosen to roost and where their droppings can create both a physical risk, through making surfaces extremely slippy and a disease risk.

These bird scaring units work by emitting at irregular intervals of varying lengths the distress call of the pest birds that require removal.

The birds hearing this call are immediately unsettled and take off and come to associate this roosting area with danger.

We have used this technique with considerable success in several large complexes where roosting starlings had become a serious problem.

Bird Fouling Removal

This is a serious problem and this work MUST only be carried out by staff wearing the correct health and safety equipment.

Over 60 transmissible diseases are associated with pest birds, some of which are fatal to man.

Feral pigeon diseases alone include pigeons ornithosis (a mild form of psittacosis), encephalitis, Newcastle disease, toxoplasmosis, pseudotuberculosis, pigeon coccidosis and salmonella food poisoning.

Pigeon droppings also provide the home to two pathogenic fungi, Cryptococcosis, which begins as a pulmonary disease and later affects the central nervous system and Histoplasmosis.

Because of the above this task is a specialised job and we can provide the properly trained staff that can out this work safely and effectively without endangering themselves or our client’s staff.

Bacterial & Insecticide Treatments

As we mentioned in the Bird Fouling section of our site, pest birds and their droppings can carry a wide range of infectious diseases.

They can also carry salmonella bacteria which can be found in the droppings of pigeons, sparrows and starlings.

No fewer than 50 different ectoparasites are carried by birds; these include bedbugs, fleas, ticks, which can all bite man.

We mention this because infestations of this type often occur AFTER bird droppings and birds have been cleared from an area.

The reason is simple, while someone has cleared up the droppings and moved the birds on, the bacteria and some insect pests remain and with their previous hosts gone, they go looking for a new host and home.

This is why when it comes to cleaning up after pests or their droppings it makes sense to use a specialised company which has wide experience and always ensures that once the cleaning and nest clearance etc., has been completed the appropriate pest control and bacterial treatments have been completed.

This ensures the complete eradication of the problem and that the areas can be safely used in the future by our client’s staff, without fear of any infection or infestation by biting insect pests.

Net Clearance (Seagulls)

We are authorised and our staff are fully trained for this type of work which can be required when seagulls choose to nest in inappropriate areas.

As seagulls are naturally aggressive in defending their nesting sites this work requires knowledge and experience if it is to be carried out safely and properly.

Certain gulls are protected by legislation and it is crucial that staff are knowledgeable and able to identify what type of gulls are involved.

Regular visits at the correct periods of the year can avert any problems and the gulls quickly relocate their nests so their breeding cycle can remain uninterrupted.
